Jumper & Vantage Point

Year: 2008, Director: Doug Liman

Year: 2008, Director: Pete Travis

i am talking about these two together because they both have the same problem.  they both have a good pitch, but nothing else.  you can picture some guy pitching these stories: one about a guy who can jump through space and one about an event that is seen over and over again from different peoples perspectives.  they sound cool right?  well, the problem is they are nothing more then those good pitches. its as if they forgot they had to make a full movie out of them.  so, besides the cool jumping gimmick and some good special effect, Jumper has a lame and unengaging story.

as for Vantage Point, i was totally into the repeating of the event over and over again from all the different points of view (based on the groans, unlike some members of the audience in the theater i was in).  however, once we finally saw everyone vantage point and the story continued on, there was nothing there.  we got our final chase scene, some action and then it was done.  if i am going to see the same thing over and over again and go along for that ride, you have got to give me a great and interesting conclusion. otherwise you could have forgone the various points of view gimmick and just made a lame thriller, which is what this turned out to be.
